Greetings from Hilton Head – 2006 Version

Hh

The beach at Palmetto Dunes.

Jo Ann’s flight landed about 15 minutes early.  After lunch we went exploring the Island to see which restaurants we liked last year that are still here this year.  Evidently all of them.  We also found some new ones that we want to try.  We checked into our unit at 3:00 and went straight to the beach to begin our week of creative sloth. The weather forecast for the week remains amazing.

Does beach weather get any better than this?

My sister is flying into Savannah on Saturday.  I’ll meet her at the airport and from there we’ll drive to the timeshare in Hilton Head.  We’ll both fly to Kentucky the next Saturday for the UK-South Carolina football game and the races at Keeneland.

It will likely change but this is the current long-range forecast for the week that we are in Hilton Head.

Panda Cam

I should have mentioned this before but you can watch Zoo Atlanta’s giant panda, Lun Lun, and her 3-week old cub 24/7 via Panda Cam.  My sister is addicted, just like she was when Tai Shan was born at the National Zoo last summer.  It is amazing to watch an animal that’s so large be so gentle with a cub that’s so tiny.

Don’t forget to check out the daily updates from the Zoo Atlanta staff.

Another new show I watched but won’t watch again

I feel sure that Brothers & Sisters will get decent, not spectacular, ratings but it’s not my kind of show.  I guess because I grew up on Leave it to Beaver, Donna Reed, and Father Knows Best I’ve never particularly liked shows about dysfunctional families, even comedies like Everyone Loves Raymond.  (One exception is Two and a Half Men, which I think is hilarious.)  Brothers & Sisters reminds me of another show I hated, thirtysomething.  It doesn’t help that Ken Olin directed the first episode of B&S and that Patricia Wettig is one of the co-stars.

On the bright side, it looks like Calista Flockhart finally took somebody’s advice and ate at least a sandwich before filming began.

P.S. Studio 60 is definitely my favorite new show.

No doubt others will post better photos later.

I got up early and fixed the honey-dijon chicken, chilled asparagus, and citrus salad that I said I’d bring.  Instead of focaccia I brought baguettes.  Unfortunately the chicken someone bought at KFC was more popular.  Heathens!  Many thanks to Harriet (of Hurricane Cookie fame) and Heather for knowing good food when they see it.  I didn’t bring a cheeky chardonnay but Chuck was kind enough to let me have one of his Boddington’s.

This was the first Lowcountry blogger meet-up where kids were invited.  Evidently Charleston bloggers are very fertile.  All of the kids were well-behaved but I’m glad that those days are long over for me.

I finally got to meet SunnieFaerie, a frequent commenter.  I’m sorry that I didn’t take a photo because Jackson is adorable.

I think it was Heather who suggested that we do this monthly.  I agree.

Update:  Jared, our resident storm watcher, and Heather said it better than I could.

Update to the update:  Eugene has lots of photos.

The new TV season

I’ve watched new TV shows more out of curiosity than out of interest.  Netflix does a good job filling my entertainment needs.

Shows I’ve watched once and will never watch again:

The Class – Isn’t a comedy supposed to be funny?  I’m guessing it will be one of the first shows to be cancelled.

Smith – It’s bad when an action show is boring, right?

Six Degrees – What network executive thought this was a good idea?

Justice – I couldn’t get into it.  Life is too short as it is.

Standoff – I thought it would be good because Berger is in it.  I was wrong.

Shows I’ve watched that I’ll keep watching, or at least keep taping and watching later:

Shark – Is James Woods great or what?  He’s the only reason I’ll keep watching it.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip – Another Aaron Sorkin winner!  I love it that he goofs on his and Matthew Perry’s past drug problems.

Vanished – It’s the intricate plot threads that make this show interesting.

Angela’s Eyes – This isn’t a usual Lifetime show since it doesn’t involve an abused wife or a cheating husband.  Like Vanished, the plot lines are complicated and keep you coming back.  That and Abigail Spencer is gorgeous.

A show I can’t make up my mind about:

Men in Trees – Definitely not as good as Northern Exposure was before Paul Provenza joined the cast.  I guess I keep watching it because Anne Heche is a quirky, pretty, petite blonde who once had a lesbian affair with Ellen DeGeneres before she decided that she liked guys better and married one.  A single guy’s fantasy.

If there have been other new shows that I haven’t mentioned it’s because I didn’t want to watch them.
